About Bill Bates


 
   
William S. (Bill) Bates is a native of Memphis Tennessee, USA raised mostly on a farm without electricity and indoor plumbing.  He moved to North Carolina at 17 when his step father, a U.S. Marine, was transferred there.

In 1952 during the Korean War, quitting high school, Bill joined the Marine Corps himself in which he served until retiring in 1972 as a Major with a Masters degree in information systems after serving at many posts and serving in the Vietnam War in 67-68.

From 1972, Bill became a consultant, first in systems development and then in project management. From 1974 to 2008 he established and operated a series of project management firms.  He sold his best known company, Bates Project Management, Inc in 2005.  Since has been a lower level private consultancy which is currently being phased out in favor of internet marketing..

Bill is a ballroom dancer and plays a terrible, but enjoyable golf game,  After being widowed, he met Barbara at his dance studio and they were married in December 2007.  He has 3 sons, 2 daughters, 9 grandchildren and a great granddaughter.  Finally, Bill is the chairman of the Board of Governors of Robert Land Academy, a private school for boys which operates on a military structure.  www.robertlandacademy.com
